A school counselor has 4 areas of responsibility in a school: the guidance curriculum, academic planning, system support, and responsive services. Below I have listed several points to help explain each area.
Guidance Curriculum:
Every class visits the school counselor once a month. Guidance lessons could focus on the following topics....
Study/test taking skills
Career exploration
Bullying
Conflict resolution/problem solving
Multicultural awareness
Academic Planning:
TIER 3 Team (SST) Chairperson
Transition to Middle School
System Support:
Collaborating and planning with teachers
Parent/Teacher conferences
Support the Administration, Teachers, Students, and Parents
Responsive Services:
Individual/Small Group Counseling
Crisis Intervention
Conflict Resolution
Referrals to outside agencies
